The Seattle Kraken launches Shane Wright for the World Junior Championships

The Seattle Kraken will release forward Shane Wright to play for Team Canada at the upcoming Junior World Championships in Halifax and Moncton.

Wright, 18, is expected to report to Team Canada in Moncton Thursday, according to TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger.

The 6-foot quarterback started and scored his first NHL goal on Tuesday night against the Montreal Canadiens in a 4-2 loss to the Kraken. He has one goal and one assist in eight NHL games this season. He scored four goals in five games during an intense spell with the Coachella Valley Firebirds in the AHL.

Wright, drafted fourth overall in June by Seattle, is the sixth player in Canadian Hockey League history to be granted exceptional status to join the OHL a year early. He did not participate in the postponed tournament in August, where Canada won the gold medal.

The tournament will be held from December 26 to January 5. Canada kicks off Boxing Day against the Czech Republic on TSN at 6:30 PM ET / 3:30 PM PT.
