Sao Paulo (AFP) – And he visited the legendary Pele family, on Saturday, in a hospital in Sao Paulo, where he suffers from exacerbation of cancer, kidney and heart diseases, according to what his daughter posted on social media.
Pele’s son Edinho – recently appointed coach of Serie B football club Londrina, based in Paraná in the north – arrived on Christmas Eve at the medical centre, where he joined his sisters Flavia and Kelly Nascimento.
“Arrived,” Kelly wrote on Instagram, along with a photo with Idino and another with her daughters, Sophia and Stephanie.
The former goalkeeper arrived a day after explaining his absence with his father to local media.
“I would like to be present, but I am committed to my mission here. I am not a doctor and I cannot be of much help,” he said in an interview published by the Estadao newspaper on Friday.
On the same day, Kelly shared a photo of herself cuddling with her 82-year-old dad in the hospital with the caption, “One more night together.”
On Wednesday, the Albert Einstein Hospital, where the three-time World Cup winner is staying, announced that his colon cancer was “progressive” and that he needed “more comprehensive care for kidney and heart failure.”
Earlier in the day, his daughters had announced that he wouldn’t be home for Christmas.
The atmosphere outside the hospital was calm, on Saturday, according to Agence France-Presse.
Pele is considered by many to be the greatest footballer of all time and has received many messages of support since his hospitalization, including from French superstar Kylian Mbappe, who called on his supporters to “pray for the king”.
Pele was hospitalized in Sao Paulo on November 29 for what his medical team described as a re-evaluation of the chemotherapy treatments he had been receiving since he underwent surgery to remove a colon polyp in September 2021.
