Instagram is trying hard to compete with TikTok when it comes to short videos. The social network has now announced several new features for its Reels platform to make it more attractive to creators.
What’s New in Instagram Reels
The company also announced in a blog post that it’s now easy to see what’s popular on Reels. Creators will find a new section with trending hashtags and songs, so they can create Reels around what others really want to see. “These are the types of information you can get from the Trending News destination,” Instagram says.
Another new feature coming to Reels is a revamped editor that makes aligning and syncing items easier. Reel metrics are now more detailed too, with information on total watch time and average watch time. Scales are now accessible directly from your Reels.
Here’s how Instagram describes the new metrics for Reels:
Total Watch Time records the total playback time of the reel, including the time spent replaying the clip. Average watch time shows the average time spent playing a tape, calculated by dividing the watch time by the total number of plays. For example, if your average watch time is 17 seconds, out of everyone who watched your video, 17 seconds watched it. This will help you better understand where people are engaging or where you might need to build stronger traction to keep your viewers longer.
And according to Instagram, creators will receive notifications when they get new followers through Reels. On top of that, the company is expanding its giveaways feature – which allows fans to support creators with cash – to more countries including Australia, Canada, France, Mexico, New Zealand and the UK.
All new features will be rolling out to Instagram users in the coming weeks.
