Mayor Sylvester Turner announces the celebration of Houston’s Third Music Day
June 1, 2023 – Mayor Sylvester Turner is encouraging Houstonians to participate in Make Music in Houston Day again this year. This all-day celebration takes place on Tuesday, June 21, the longest day of the year – the summer solstice.
More than 100 cities across the country participated in nearly 4,000 free festive events last year, demonstrating the power of music to unite and uplift people, spread joy and build community. The celebration reflects each city and features patriotic programs, free performances, live singing, patio and park music lessons, jam sessions, and all-inclusive music.
“The City of Houston is thrilled to once again be a part of the international Make Music Day roster,” said Mayor Turner. Last year, we began celebrating in partnership with the Consulate General of France in Houston on the steps of City Hall. I once again invite all Houstonians, of all musical levels, to join us and bring music to our neighborhoods, offices, and communities on this festive day of music. »
Make Music Day began in France in 1982 as Fête de la Musique and has spread to more than 1,000 cities in 120 countries. Houston is once again partnering with the French Consulate and several countries represented by the Consular Corps in Houston to take part in the global event.
The Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs (MOCA) has demonstrated its commitment to supporting Houston’s music industry. MOCA is also grateful to partner with Houston-based Reading with Rappers (RWAR) literacy program this year, and again with the Houston Professional Musicians Association (HPMA) providing funding for its members for the global event.

The Make Music Houston roster currently includes:
- City Hall Ceremonies – A series of performances including RWAR artist BuddieRoe on the steps of City Hall are planned after a few words from the Mayor and the Consulate General of France to launch Make Music Day in Houston.
- French consulate The Consulate General of France in Houston runs music programs to inspire and encourage the music industry among other local consulates.
- cultural spaces Houston’s seven designated cultural arts districts will energize facilities and community spaces with live music and musical collaborations.
- The iconic Midtown Cultural Arts District sign located in Bagby Park (415 Gray Street) will be wrapped in a design by a local Houston artist to honor and celebrate National Day on June 19. On June 21, musicians must perform in front of the banner. The backdrop is a reminder of our nation’s history as we conclude by celebrating the deep cultural heritage of Texas.
- The Houston Arts District will host Nameless Sound, a 17-person improvisational orchestra featuring original scores for improvisation, particularly suited to the SITE Gallery (2101 Winter Street, under the rice silos at Sawyer Yards). Participants are invited to cross the silos to listen to the various musical instruments around the room from 6 to 8 pm that evening.
- Abia’s scepterl – People of all ages and skill levels will join online and in-person setups to compose music in large groups using a single instrument.
