HOUSTON (AP) — Alex Bregman and Jose Abreu each had two RBIs, and Kyle Tucker added three hits to lead the Houston Astros to a 5-2 victory over Los Angeles Thursday night in a game featuring boxing coach Phil Niven. Disqualified.
It was Coach Dusty Baker’s 2,126th career win, which ranks him eighth on the all-time baseball players list.
Houston’s Ronell Blanco (1-0), who was called up from Triple-A Sugar Land before the game, allowed seven hits and two runs in 5 1/3 innings pitched to earn his first major league start. The 29-year-old has made 16 appearances in his career.
Ryan Pressley allowed a scoreless ninth inning on 11 saves.
Houston trailed in the fifth when Corey Goulkes doubled and moved up to third on a wild throw by Red Detmers (0-5). The Astros connected it to “Yainer Diaz”. Jose Altuve singled and Detmers walked Yordan Alvarez with two outs to load the bases.
Bregman then smoked a single to left to give Houston a 4-2 lead.
The Angels had a shot to close the gap in the sixth when they charged from one. But Taylor Ward was called on a low blow, which brought Nevin out of the dugout and head-to-head with panel umpire Stu Shorewater.
He was quickly kicked out, but continued to yell at her for a few seconds before taking off his hat and yelling at her again.
Second base umpire Mark Wegner came to the plate and stood between the men and gently pushed Nevin off Shorewater.
Then Nevin left the field before stopping on the upper steps of the dugout to rant a little more about Scheurwater before leaving the dugout. Mike Trout lined up to end the inning after the ejection.
Detmers allowed four runs and six hits with two hits in five innings to go winless this year.
Brandon Drury hit a solo homer that gave the Angels the lead in the fifth, and Hunter Renfro added three hits in the loss.

Drury connected his bench shot in left field with two outs in the fifth inning to make it 2-1.
Tucker doubled the eighth and Abreu scored both goals, making it 5-2.
