Now that the 2022-23 season is officially over, the Montreal Canadiens will once again have the option to use waivers if they want to bolster their roster.
Off-Season Allocation Priority is very simple, it’s a reverse order of the end-of-season arrangement.
The Canadiens finished last season with just 68 points, which puts them in the top five in the 2023 Entry Draft. As an added bonus, they will retain the NHL’s fifth player priority assignment through November 1.
The waiver priority list only applies if two or more teams claim the same player.
The priority of waiving a claim is spelled out in the following manner in the NHL collective agreement.
” In the event that more than one club submits a request for that player, the request must: (1) be transferred to the requesting club with the lowest possible percentage of points in the league at the time the franchises are requested, or (2) if waivers are requested outside of the regular season, or A successful waiver application (i.e. standing in for the league’s regular season draw) was submitted during the previous regular season.”
The exemption theme rarely gives teams many talent options, though there are hidden gems available once in a blue moon, especially now that we’re entering an era where maximum space is the ultimate asset.
Gems like Paul Byron and Jonathan Kovacevic.
Another good example is Eli Tolvanen, who was a first-round draft pick in 2017. He was placed on waivers by the Nashville Predators last season, but despite his offensive potential, neither team bothered to make a claim before he finally fell to the Seattle Kraken , who fortunately filed a claim. . Tolvanen went on to score 16 goals and 11 assists in 48 games for the Kraken.
