My purchase of the Steam Deck last year reignited my long dormant love for arcade racers. Recent, high-quality entries in the genre are rare.
Enter New Star GP, which seems to have filled everything in my heart since playing F1 Pole Position on the SNES in 1993.
Here is the ad:
The arcade racers I liked the most always had more stuff under the surface than when they first appeared. New Star GP seems to follow the same pattern, being a “pick-up-and-play arcade driving experience”, but also lets you tackle “tire selection and wear, component reliability, slip antagonists, fuel load, and even pit strategy,” according to this one. Steam page.
There are Grand Prix races, checkpoints, eliminations and time trials to compete in. You can also start your career in the 80s and enter a new decade – with a new style of car – after winning a season. The races take place in real locations, such as Naples, Brisbane and Vienna, but there is no mention that they are based on real tracks. I suspect license fees would prevent this.
New Star GP does not yet have a release date, but it will arrive early when it launches. The initial release will only include the 80s and 90s decades, with future time periods and new cars and tracks to be added over 2-4 months after release. The price will also increase when it reaches 1.0.
