Denis Shapovalov and Bianca Andreescu performed at Wimbledon on Thursday in a mixed day for Canadian players at the All England Club.
Shapovalov, seeded No. 26 from Richmond Hill, beat Ott. France’s Gregoire Barrier 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (7) in the men’s singles match in the second round. It took him 1 hour and 52 minutes to achieve victory.
Next time, he will meet British star Liam Brody, who defeated Norwegian Casper Rudd in five sets.
Andreescu, from Mississauga, Ontario, opened with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 victory over Hungarian Anna Bondar. 50th seed Canada will face 26th seed Anelina Kalinina of Ukraine in the second round.
Milos Raonic of Thornhill, Ont., and Lela Fernandez of Laval, Que., lost their singles matches in the second round, while Ottawa’s Gabriel Dabrowski fell in the women’s doubles.
Raonic lost a decision 6-4, 7-6(4), 6-7(4), 6-4 to 16th seed American Tommy Ball. France’s Caroline Garcia beat Fernandez 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (6).
Dutchwomen Lauren Davis and Rosalie van der Hoek beat Serbians Dabrowski and Aleksandra Krunic 6-4, 6-0 in their first-round match.
Dabrowski, Andreescu, and Fernandez are all registered for the mixed doubles competition, which has yet to start. Fernandez is also scheduled to compete in the women’s doubles first round match against Americans Alicia Parks and Peyton Stearns on Friday.
Many matches in the early days of a Grand Slam event were suspended or postponed due to wet weather.
